EcoLens is a browser extension that estimates the carbon footprint of the web page you're viewing — its data weight, likely CO2 emissions, and whether it's served by a renewable-powered host. This policy describes what the extension does with data as a result.
The table below covers every category of information EcoLens touches. "Stored locally" means it is written to your browser's own extension storage and never reaches me or any server I control.
| Data | Collected when | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Current tab's URL & domain | You open the popup | Stored locally |
| Page weight (bytes transferred, resource count) | You open the popup, or enable Accurate Mode | Stored locally |
| Domain being scanned | Every scan | Sent to the Green Web Foundation's public API, to check hosting |
| Scan history & settings | Ongoing, as you use it | Stored locally |
| Name, email, location, payment info | Never | Not collected |
EcoLens has no backend server of its own. There is nothing for a request to reach except the one third-party API above.
To show whether a site runs on renewable energy, EcoLens sends the domain you're scanning — for example example.com, never the full URL or page content — to the Green Web Foundation's Green Web Check API. This happens once per scan, only for sites you actively check. I don't control that service's own data handling; see their site for details.
Accurate Mode is an optional, off-by-default setting. If you turn it on, EcoLens reloads the page you're scanning and reads real network response sizes for that one page load, to measure data weight more precisely than the browser's built-in Performance API alone. This still runs only for a page you deliberately scan — it does not run in the background, and the measurements are used the same way as in section 2: stored locally, nothing transmitted beyond the Green Web Foundation check.
Open EcoLens's settings page to clear your scan history, clear cached results, or revoke the Accurate Mode permission at any time. Uninstalling the extension removes all locally stored data with it, since it was never stored anywhere else.
If this policy changes, I'll update the effective date above. Continued use of EcoLens after a change means you accept the revised policy.
